Emergency room diagnoses for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome rose 16% between October and May, a trend researchers attribute largely to the introduction of a specific medical billing code that improved tracking of the condition. The syndrome, which causes severe vomiting and abdominal pain in frequent marijuana users, saw the sharpest increases among patients aged 15 to 24, women, and Black and Indigenous populations.
